The Academic Staff Union of Universities has begun reconciliatory talks with a breakaway group known as the Congress of University Academics with the aim of bringing them back into fold.

ASUU National President, Prof  Biodun Ogunyemi, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, confirmed the development, saying  “senior comrades are intervening in the matter and there are people talking to both sides”.

Ogunyemi, who did not disclose the names of the officials involved, said the universities still had the majority of their lecturers in  ASUU.

Our correspondent learnt that top ASUU leaders at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, and Ambrose Ali University, Edo State, had been discussing with the breakaway CONUA members to find a middle ground.

It was reported on Monday that the 41-year-old ASUU split with the emergence of CONUA, having lecturers drawn from five universities, after the formation of the new union was announced in Ile-Ife on Saturday.

The lecturers, who unveiled the new union, were from the Federal University, Lokoja, Kwara State University, Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti and OAU.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige,  said  the Federal Government had received and was looking at the application submitted by CONUA.

Ogunyemi told punch correspondent that  ASUU  was intact and still controlled the majority of lecturers at OAU and other four universities.

Lupita Nyong’o and and Viola Davis are set to celebrate the real lives of the Dahomey Amazons with a movie set for takeoff very soon.

This year, the former has prepared a documentary about the very same women to support the movie and its fascinating story.

Dahomey was a prominent and powerful African kingdom that existed between 1600 and 1894 and was elevated by a group of women named the Mino which simply means “our mothers.”

The all-female force was founded by King Houegbadja and is said to have been made up of foreign captives who were trained to protect the kingdom against the threat of rival groups and support its quest for power.

Lupita is now determined to tell their story.

Channel 4’s Commissioning Editor, Arts & Topical Specialist Factual Shaminder Nahal shares…

Lupita Nyong’o’s investigation into the real story of the all-female army is thrilling, haunting and emotional. It’s amazing the true story of these kick-ass female fighters isn’t more widely known–and in telling it, the film challenges dominant narratives about race, women and power. With some surprises along the way.

Its name? ‘Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong’o.’

SandStone Global’s Creative Director Bettany Hughes adds…

The Agojie women were recruited by their kings across three centuries and fought in huge numbers in highly-trained battalions. Women have frequently been written out of history, and powerful women fetishized–this is a case in point. Lupita Nyong’o asks searing questions about power play in history and who tells whose story.

Watch The Rousing Trailer For Chinonye Chukwu's Oscar Hopeful, 'Clemency'

Alfre Woodard is Oscar-worthy!

Premiering to much acclaim at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival this February, Chinonye Chukwu‘s Clemency has been a critical darling for most of the year. Finally, the trailer for the rousing drama has been released, giving us a sneak peek into the Oscar hopeful.

Written and directed by recent Oscar voter, Chinonye Chukwu, Clemency is a hard-hitting drama that follows a prison warden, Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard) who develops an emotional connection to a death row inmate (Aldis Hodge) she is scheduled to execute.

Depicting Williams’ psychological turmoil and the toll the impending execution has taken on her personal life, the Clemency trailer juxtaposes her inner struggles with Anthony Woods’ hope, as he grows confident that he will be exonerated before the execution date.

Earning Chinonye Chukwu the honour of becoming the first black woman to win Sundance’s highest honour, the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, Clemency has rightfully garnered Oscar buzz, with Alfre Woodard, in particular, being praised for what has been called “career-best work”.

Distribution giants, Neon have promised that we’ll finally be let in on all the fuss before the year runs out, as they’ve set Clemency‘s theatre release date for December 27. We’re excited at the possibility of Clemency becoming the first Nigerian-directed film to get some Oscar love.

#RevolutionNow: Court refuses to release Omoyele Sowore

RevolutionNow: Court refuses to release Omoyele Sowore

A Federal High Court in Lagos has declined to order the release of SaharaReporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and other persons in connection with the August 5, #RevolutionNow protest.

Vacation judge, Justice Nicholas Oweibo, said he needed to first hear from the Federal Government, Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

He ordered the DSS and IGP to appear before him on September 4 to show cause why Sowore and other protesters in detention should not be immediately released.

The judge also ordered Lagos-based lawyer, Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, who filed the ex-parte application seeking the detainees’ release, to put the IGP and DSS on notice.

Ogungbeje, who said he participated in the #RevolutionNow protest but was not arrested, filed the application on behalf of himself and other participants.

He prayed the court to declare as “unconstitutional and illegal police clampdown of the protesters and the arrest of Sowore by the DSS.”

He also sought an order for the immediate and unconditional release of those arrested and detained.

Joined as respondents in the application were the Federal Government, the DSS and the IG.

Giving reasons why the arrested persons should be immediately and unconditionally released, Ogungbeje said, “There has been a grave constitutional infraction committed by the respondents against the applicant and other persons who engaged in the peaceful protest for good governance in Nigeria.”

The lawyer said he was deprived of his constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful assembly and association and the right to freedom of expression.

“On the 3rd of August, 2019, the convener of the protest, Mr Omoyele Sowore’s residence was forcefully invaded and put under siege; he was arrested, whisked away and detained in the detention facility of the 2nd respondent (DSS).

“Mr Omoyele Sowore has not committed any offence known to law to warrant the infringement and likely infringement of rights by the respondents.

“By engaging in the peaceful protest, the applicant and other persons have not committed any offence known to law to warrant the treatment meted out to them by the respondents and their agents,” Ogungbeje said.

He urged the court to order the immediate release of those arrested and detained.

The former continues to reap the benefits of being the game’s newest stars, already earning co-signs from hip-hop’s elite. Now, following a slew of remix contributions, Blueface feels right at home over pianos and 808 kicks.

In a since-deleted Instagram post, Chris wrote “THIS BITCH LYIN” in his caption and he’s now taken those three words and plastered them on some t-shirts. According to The Blast the original term was coined when Chris was accused of assaulting model Baylee Curran back in 2016 and now he’s found another way to bring it back to light again.

The shirts are being sold online through Chris’ Black Pyramid clothing line, going for $38 a piece.

After Chris was released from custody he stayed in the city to finish up some filming an upcoming music video.
