Alfre Woodard is Oscar-worthy!
Premiering to much acclaim at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival this February, Chinonye Chukwu‘s Clemency has been a critical darling for most of the year. Finally, the trailer for the rousing drama has been released, giving us a sneak peek into the Oscar hopeful.
Written and directed by recent Oscar voter, Chinonye Chukwu, Clemency is a hard-hitting drama that follows a prison warden, Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard) who develops an emotional connection to a death row inmate (Aldis Hodge) she is scheduled to execute.
Depicting Williams’ psychological turmoil and the toll the impending execution has taken on her personal life, the Clemency trailer juxtaposes her inner struggles with Anthony Woods’ hope, as he grows confident that he will be exonerated before the execution date.
Earning Chinonye Chukwu the honour of becoming the first black woman to win Sundance’s highest honour, the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize, Clemency has rightfully garnered Oscar buzz, with Alfre Woodard, in particular, being praised for what has been called “career-best work”.
Distribution giants, Neon have promised that we’ll finally be let in on all the fuss before the year runs out, as they’ve set Clemency‘s theatre release date for December 27. We’re excited at the possibility of Clemency becoming the first Nigerian-directed film to get some Oscar love.
